During the week I stumbled across a book on Hermes – please, not the fashion label, beautiful and all as their scarves are. But, no, I am speaking of the Egyptian sage or sages, who wrote over 3,000 years before Christ. I had forgotten ‘The Hermetica, the Lost Wisdom of the Pharaohs’, by Timothy Freke and Peter Candy was on my bookshelf, but I am so glad I found it again. The pearls of wisdom he wrote are just mind-blowing in their simplicity, and downright common sense. It is no surprise then that Hermetic writing is accredited to being the foundations of Western philosophy, which therefore filtered into religion. It is mystical spirituality at its finest, and when broken down into everyday language, it is very comprehensible. To me it makes sense. Hermes and ancient Egypt may seem too abstract or too intense for a lot of people, but actually, this is what is needed in this day and age to bring us back in line with ourselves. Hermes, if you like was the Deepak Chopra of his day, the Doreen Virtue (before she went backward) and the Dali Lama rolled into one. Hermetic philosophy has stood the test of time, and that alone is proof of its fruit, as normally if something is full of wind, it just blows away, like a leaf in autumn it falls to the ground where it dies. Even before hi-tech gadgets, high street fashion shops, and online shopping, Hermes saw how being caught up in transitory sensual pleasures diverted us from our true selves. Hermes knew that there was only one way to free ourselves from the hardships of life, he knew we were shooting ourselves in the foot, and that we have ourselves enslaved by possessions. He knew that we were made in the image of God and that only like can know like, therefore we must seek the God within and come to know him. In Hermes thought, the greatest mistake that mankind makes is that we have the ability to come to know God and the power within us to become just like Him, but, we do not activate it. Ignorance of the soul and its capabilities are keeping us, prisoners. Hermes rightly thought that we need to awaken from our ignorance and to free ourselves from enslavement once and for all. And the good news is, is that this is easily achieved. Even, wishing to know God is enough to set us on the right path, God will come to us, and the spiritual journey is not is a difficult one. But, you must not shut your soul up in your body, nor be a slave to it or your possessions, for the very purpose of life is to know God. That enlightenment is oneness with God, and that our mind emanates from God, allowing us to know God. In a nutshell, Hermes wanted us to expand our consciousness in order to know ourselves and to know God. We have been told the same thing time and time again, going back thousands of years and I think that humanity maybe finally getting the message. And it is thankfully happening, it is creeping in as consciousness and awareness grows, and this has become more and more evident in recent years. Hermes scarves may go in and out of fashion, but the divine wisdom of the ages, now theres something worth buying into.
